What is the Karakamsha?
In Jaimini astrology, the Atmakaraka— the planet at the highest degree in your chart — carries the soul’s agenda. The Karakamsha is the sign that planet occupies in the Navamsa (D9). Sage Jaimini reads the Karakamsha as a chart in its own right: the grahas that sit in it and aspect it, and the houses counted from it, describe what the soul has come to work on.
How it is calculated
First identify the Atmakaraka by ranking the planets by degree within their sign — the highest is the AK. Then find that planet’s sign in the Navamsa (D9) divisional chart; that sign is the Karakamsha. Because it turns on exact degrees and the D9, an accurate birth time is essential — a small error can move both the Atmakaraka and its Navamsa sign.
The moksha gate and the ishta devata
Two of the most-read signals sit around the Karakamsha. The 12th house from the Karakamsha is the classical moksha gate — benefics or Ketu there are among the yogas for liberation. The ishta devata, your cherished form of the divine for spiritual practice, is read from the graha influencing that 12th. This calculator surfaces the placements; the yogas they form and what they ask of you are read in the full chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Karakamsha?
The Karakamsha is the sign the Atmakaraka (your highest-degree planet, the soul significator) occupies in the Navamsa (D9). In Jaimini astrology it is read as the 'soul's chart' — the sign, the grahas around it, and the houses counted from it describe the deeper agenda of this life.
How is the Karakamsha calculated?
First find the Atmakaraka — the planet at the highest degree within its sign. Then look up which sign that planet falls in within the Navamsa (D9) divisional chart. That sign is the Karakamsha. Because it depends on exact degrees and the D9, an accurate birth time is essential.
What is the 12th from Karakamsha?
The 12th house counted from the Karakamsha is the classical 'moksha gate' — benefics or Ketu placed there are among the yogas Jaimini reads for liberation and a refined afterlife. The calculator shows the sign and any grahas sitting in it; what the combination means is read in the full chart.
What is the ishta devata?
The ishta devata is your cherished form of the divine — the deity best suited to your spiritual practice. In Jaimini's method it is read from the graha in (or influencing) the 12th from Karakamsha, and its lord when that house is empty. This calculator shows those 12th-from-Karakamsha placements; naming the deity — where lineages apply tie-breaking and lordship rules differently — is left to the full reading, not asserted here.
Does the Karakamsha alone reveal my path?
No. The Karakamsha names where the soul is working; the meaning comes from the grahas that occupy and aspect it, the moksha and dharma yogas it forms, and the dashas that activate it. Treat it as the spine of the soul reading, interpreted in the context of the whole chart.
