What is the Karakamsha?
The Karakamsha is the Navamsa sign of your Atmakaraka. In Jaimini astrology, the Atmakaraka — the planet at the highest degree in your chart — carries the soul’s agenda. The Karakamsha is the sign that planet occupies in the Navamsa (D9). Sage Jaimini reads the Karakamsha as a chart in its own right: the grahas that sit in it and aspect it, and the houses counted from it, describe what the soul has come to work on.
How it is calculated
First identify the Atmakaraka by ranking the planets by degree within their sign — the highest is the AK. (You can find yours with the Chara Karaka calculator.) Then find that planet’s sign in the Navamsa (D9) divisional chart; that sign is the Karakamsha. Because it turns on exact degrees and the D9, an accurate birth time is essential — a small error can move both the Atmakaraka and its Navamsa sign.
Worked example
The chain is always the same: highest-degree planet → its D9 sign → the Karakamsha.
Example. Suppose the Atmakaraka is Venus at 27°10′ Libra — the highest-degree planet, so it carries the soul. To find the Karakamsha, take Venus into the Navamsa (D9): 27°10′ falls in the ninth navamsa of the sign, and counting nine navamsas from Libra (a movable sign, which begins its navamsa from itself) lands in Gemini. So the Karakamsha is Gemini — the soul’s path leans toward curiosity, communication, and learning through the exchange between minds. The moksha gate, the 12th from Gemini, is Taurus; grahas or Ketu there are what the reading weighs for liberation.
