Mars in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) Mars, or Mangala, is the natural significator of drive: the capacity to act, to assert oneself, to push through resistance, and to protect what matters. It stands for courage, initiative, and physical energy, and traditionally for siblings and for the effort a person is willing to spend. Where the Moon receives and the Sun defines, Mars moves.
But Mars is never read from its house or sign alone. Its expression depends on the sign it occupies (which sets its dignity, from exalted in Capricorn and its own signs of Aries and Scorpio to debilitated in Cancer), the houses it rules for your rising sign, its overall strength, and the aspects it receives. This is why the same Mars can read as steady resolve in one chart and as friction that has to be worked with in another.
