Mercury in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) Mercury, or Budha, is the natural significator of the thinking mind: discernment, learning, speech, and the exchange of information. It stands for how a person compares, analyses, calculates, and finds workable language for a situation, and traditionally for trade, writing, mathematics, and study. Where the Moon receives and the Sun defines, Mercury sorts and connects.
But Mercury is never read from its house or sign alone. Its expression depends on the sign it occupies (which sets its dignity, from exalted in Virgo, one of its two own signs alongside Gemini, to debilitated in Pisces), the houses it rules for your rising sign, its overall strength, and the aspects it receives. Because Mercury stays close to the Sun, it is also read for combustion, and when it turns retrograde for how it reworks its themes inwardly. This is why the same Mercury can read as clear, adaptable discernment in one chart and as friction that has to be worked with in another.
