The Moon in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) the Moon, or Chandra, is the natural significator of the mind: your emotions, instincts, memory, and the need for comfort and belonging. It also stands for the mother and for how you nurture and are soothed. In Jyotish the Moon is so central that many things, including your Vimshottari dasha and your birth star, are read from it rather than from the Sun.
But the Moon is never read from its house or sign alone. Its expression depends on the sign it occupies (which sets its dignity, from exalted in Taurus to debilitated in Scorpio), the houses it rules for your rising sign, its overall strength (including how full or dark the Moon was at your birth), and the aspects it receives. This is why two people with the Moon in the same place can feel it very differently. Each page below explains the general placement first, then what changes it, so you can see where the general rule ends and your own chart begins.
The Moon through the 12 houses
The house shows the area of life the Moon colours with feeling, from the 1st house of the self to the 4th house of home and heart and the 12th of rest and retreat.
The Moon through the 12 signs
The sign colours how the Moon feels and sets how comfortable it is, from its exaltation in Taurus to its own sign of Cancer to its debilitation in Scorpio.
